Many people ask how many hours you need to prepare to take the patent bar. The answer depends on several factors including your experience thus far with patent law. While no general answer may be able to address the many individual situations, one thing is clear. Because of the way TAPRE Course is structured, you will need less time to prepare for the patent bar using TAPRE Course than other courses. Three aspects of the structure help make TAPRE Course the most efficient way to prepare.
TAPRE Course patent bar flash cards are now available separately from the complete patent bar course. Whether you are taking a patent bar course or creating your own study plan, these flash cards will help you to memorize the essential material for the patent bar. No matter how fast you are at finding answers in the MPEP, the complexity and time constraints of the exam require that you memorize many key areas if you want to pass. These areas are all covered in the flash cards.
There are three requirements an applicant must establish to be admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (the Office):
Most patent bar courses, including PLI and PATBAR, present the exam material in MPEP-chapter order. Unfortunately, the MPEP was designed to be a reference and is not organized to help you get ready for the patent bar! If you want to learn to speak French, picking up a French dictionary and starting to memorize A-words and then B-words and on through Z-words, is going to be a very confusing and inefficient way to learn. It might even make you feel like giving up before you've even had a chance. Some people think other courses are deliberately trying to be confusing. Why do other courses take the A-Z approach? That's a very good question. Tradition?
